LinkedIn: Kickstarting your Network

Logging on to Linkedin

Within the past ten years, social media popularity has begun to rise. LinkedIn’s platform allows you, the user, to connect with others around the globe. LinkedIn has become the largest business-oriented networking website targeting the connection of professionals. This networking platform allows you to build relationships with potential and past co-workers. Establishing your profile allows you to build an online resume that can showcase your skills, experience, education, and contact information.

Five Benefits of Using LinkedIn

  1. Expanding your Network

LinkedIn allows you the opportunity to connect with other professionals in your field. A big plus: It is free!  LinkedIn has over 500 million users from all over the globe. You can connect with people from companies you’re interested in, past-coworker, fellow alumni from your college and join groups with the same interests. It might be hard to keep track of all those business cards, but that professional can be easily found from a quick search on LinkedIn.

  1. Job Postings

LinkedIn has approximately 3 million active jobs listening on the website. Employers post jobs on LinkedIn to gather a strong pool of individuals.  In a job posting, it will include the job title, the company, estimated salary, how many people work for the company, what type of company it is, how many connections you have that work at that company, if the job is actively recruiting, and a job description. Job descriptions will have details about the company, what the job is about, and the requirements (education & experience).

  1. Researching Businesses

LinkedIn is a great way to research companies before you apply and when preparing for an interview. Companies include their mission and values on LinkedIn. Often, the company includes their website in their description to allow you to conduct more research. As well, their profile includes updates, news articles, and announcements from the company. Business profiles also include the employees that work there. This allows you to try to make connections and reach out to employees to learn about possible job opportunities at their company.

  1. Announcing your accomplishments

You deserve to brag about yourself! LinkedIn is the new online resume. Did you just complete a certification, new skill, or graduate from college? Let your connections know. Publishing more consistently on LinkedIn allows your content to be seen more. Every time you post on LinkedIn your connections are notified, so that they may engage. When one of your connections likes, comments, or shares on your post it is seen in their network which allows you to broaden your possible connections. Be sure to include pictures and videos as those are more likely to catch your connections’ eye.

  1. Connecting with Recruiters

When in your job search, LinkedIn can be a great tool. After creating a profile, recruiters can see what your interest and skill set is. Recruiters use LinkedIn to find qualified candidates for their available positions as well as to make connections with companies. Recruiters will often contact you through messaging to offer to chat about what possible opportunities you are open to or are thinking about. Do not be afraid to connect with a recruiter even if you are not currently looking for a position!

If you are in the market for a new job opportunity, having an updated and polished resume is critical to successfully finding employment. Check out these tips and tricks to clean up your resume:

  1. Highlight your contact information

When sending in your resume make sure your contact information is easy to find or towards the top of your resume. Your contact information should include your name, phone number, email, city you are located, and a link to your LinkedIn profile if you have one.

  1. Remove your objective statement

Objective statements are a thing of the past. It is obvious to the employer what your objective is if you are taking the time to fill out the application. This is one of the easiest things you can do to update your resume making it clear and concise. Instead of having an objective statement, consider adding your skills and certifications to the bottom of your resume to show how you can provide to the employer.

  1. Customize the resume to your industry

When applying for a job make sure it is industry specific. You do not want an abstract, artsy resume covered in graphics if you are applying for an engineering job, although having a clean and well-designed resume helps you stand out. Often the system does not recognize abstract resumes.  Make sure to list all the jobs you have had in that field even if they were temporary positions. Also, make sure your experience is relevant. Each job listing should include several bullet points of descriptions highlighting key roles executed during the job.

  1. Proofread your resume

When submitting your application, a resume is the first piece of work an employer will see. This means that it needs to be your best work. Make sure there are no typos, spelling errors, or grammatical mistakes.

  1. Use easy-to-read fonts

Ensuring the fonts on your resume are readable is a key essential when applying to a job. Consider using business-standard formats such as Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial. Our recruiters typically suggest a font size of 10-12. This will allow for easier reading when opening on a desktop or mobile device.

  1. Using the Right Language

The right words can make or break your resume. Make sure you are using strong action words for example, if you want to say, “Did daily tasks quickly” you could substitute this for “Executed daily assignments efficiently.” These words allow the employer to see your ability in a professional elevated language.

  1. Format your resume

Finally, your resume should be formatted correctly. It should be kept to one page in-length with one-inch margins.  The only exception for two-page resumes is if you have 10+ years of experience or you are applying to a leadership position. Our staffing agency suggests your resume should have section on experience, education, skills, contact information, and other applicable information to your desired career.

Learn how to get the ideal resume.

3 Steps to Tailor Your Resume to the Job

If you have read any resume advice online it’s likely that you have seen a section on how essential it is to tailor your resume to fit the job you’re applying for. This may seem like a small change, but it can be the difference in landing the job you want.

When you first create your resume without a specific job in mind, you will probably focus on highlighting your accomplishments and skills to make you look as impressive as possible. While this does make sense at first, recruiters are looking for specific things that pop off the page.

Do Your Research

This is the first step to this process, and while it may seem like a no brainer you’d be surprised how many people don’t spend enough time doing their research. It is important that you know exactly all that the company does, and what they are looking for. They are going to compare your resume to others and decide on the best fit, so it is incredibly important your skills and experience are aligned with what they are looking for. Include active verbs and relevant keywords that will jump off the page.

Here is a great website for inspiration for relevant keywords: https://careersidekick.com/words-for-resume/

Match the Job Description

After you have done your research, you should have a pretty good idea at what the recruiter is looking for. It is important to highlight skills and past experience that are directly mentioned and referenced by the employer. If you have worked multiple jobs prior, highlight the one that you feel prepared you most for this one. You are making their job easier by providing exactly what they are looking for.

Make Your Resume Skimmable

Recruiters do not always have time to read an entire resume. Often, they will skim the resume to see if anything jumps out at them. It is imperative that your resume is short and includes only the information this specific employer needs to see. You most likely will have to cut down and reformat your resume from its original final product. There may be information you once deemed essential that no longer fits. This makes you stand out and can be the reason you get to the next step in the hiring process.

By tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for, it will be no time before applications turn into interviews and interviews turn into jobs!

Having a good resume is important when trying to land the job you want. Your resume is the first thing a hiring manager will see and will either make or break your chance of landing the interview. As a leading staffing agency in South Carolina, we see a lot of resumes come through. We’ve asked a team member for advice!

How can you make your resume stand out?

Use key words in the job description if it is relevant to your job experience. When a recruiter reviews your resume, they are looking for exact words and or phrases that let them know that you have experience in that particular subject. Also, tailor your resume to your industry. For instance, a lot of pictures colors, fonts, and a lot of personality on a resume would be fitting for a position in the creative industry (ex. web design, graphic design, media, and communication.) Those things featured on a resume type of resume wouldn’t necessarily be suited for an IT or Sales position.

What are some of the first things you look at when looking at a resume?

The first thing that I look for when reviewing a resume is relevant experience and job stability. Some recruiters look at format. If you are applying for a technical position, then it is important to represent that in the formatting of your resume. Relevant experience is so important to a recruiter. We like to see examples of work related experience that will translate well to the job you applied. A history of job stability is a key sign that the candidate is committed to fulfilling their role with a company.

What are some of the common mistakes you see on a resume?

Recruiters see a lot of resumes in a day and it is really easy to spot mistakes and/or useless information. The top 4 mistakes that I see on a resume are:

  1. Incorrect contact information
  2. Too wordy/Not enough detail – I know these can be contradictory but having too many details that are not relevant can lose the attention of the recruiter. Not enough detail is just as ineffective. If you put on your resume that you are a Team Lead but don’t list any leadership responsibilities, it will not give the recruiter full confidence that you are qualified for a job.
  3. Unprofessional email address – Email addresses are free! It is important that you do not have an inappropriate or unprofessional email address. Most recruiters will be contacting applicants via email so it is important that you have a simple and professional email address.
  4. Spelling and grammatical errors – This can be a representation of the applicant as an employee. If we are identifying for a quality role and the resume has grammatical errors, the recruiter may pass on them because the first impression is not having an eye for detail.

Look here for 7 ways to improve your resume: https://www.recruitingsolutionsonline.com/7-ways-to-improve-your-resume-to-get-a-job-asap/

What are some common skill-sets that you’d like to see on a resume that people often forget to add?

  • Critical Thinking – Being able to think rationally and thoughtfully is the basis of critical thinking. Employers want workers who can think through a problem or a project and determine the best steps needed. Critical thinkers come up with new and better ways to work, making it an invaluable skill to put on a resume.
  • Organization – This is not just about having a neat desk, but organizing tasks and projects for your coworkers, management, and at the very least, yourself! If you want to show off your organization skills, having a tightly structured resume certainly helps.
  • Leadership – Leadership skills are skills you use when organizing other people to reach a shared goal. Whether you’re in a management position or leading a project, leadership skills require you to motivate others to complete a series of tasks, often according to a schedule.

How would you describe the perfect resume?

My ideal resume would include your name and contact information (professional email address, phone number, LinkedIn profile). The work experience should be listed in descending chronological order. That means the most recent position is the first listed. It should have to date the applicant started the position and the date employment ended. I prefer the format 8/2016 – 12/2019 but other recruiters may like the month written out.

The job responsibilities should be short and direct with a high level overview of day-to-day accomplishments. I love to see quantitative data that shows impacts that the applicant has made in the business. (For example:  Increased retention of employees by 56% year over year). I like to see the highest level of education listed at the end. Depending on the position, professional and personal skills are a great point of reference to determine an individual’s strengths.

Back on the job hunt?

If you are relatively new to the job hunt or if it has been a while since you have searched for a job, you will quickly realize how different the current South Carolina job market is. Online job boards and job portals are constantly evolving with new technology, applicant tracking systems, various job boards and job search engines, etc.

Often times, job seekers will reach out to a company to ask if they are hiring or to connect with someone personally in regards to a job. Companies will then typically inform the interested job seeker to go to their website to apply, thus leaving you feeling stranded, disconnected, or unsure of what happens next in the application process.

Here are a few simple ways to better pursue your dream opportunity:

Apply with a staffing agency. When you apply with a staffing agency, recruiters will likely share with you an immediate temporary or a temp-to-hire opening. They could also skill-market your resume to their current employer database, pushing your application to the top of the stack! Recruiters can also utilize their industry knowledge and relationship with a company to increase your chances of getting hired!

Apply on job websites and/or mobile apps. A few of our favorite recommendations for applicants (in other words, websites we post our jobs to) include Glassdoor, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, CareerBuilder and LinkedIn. However, we always encourage candidates to register with us on our company website so that we can have you in our system to be considered for all of our current and future opportunities.

Go to a job fair. It is very beneficial to meet with a recruiter in-person when possible; this way, the recruiter learns more about you, your skillset, and the type of job opportunity you are seeking. South Carolina companies and recruiters can get bombarded with applicants and resumes — an in-person meeting is one way you are sure to stand out!

With locations in Greenville, Columbia and Florence, South Carolina, Recruiting Solutions is the destination employment agency for job seekers. Register with us today to be considered for a light industrial, office professional, or information technology job opportunity!

When you are applying for a job, here are four ways to stand out amongst the competition.

  1. Make your resume stand out.  Your resume is the first thing a company will look at before they decide to interview you. Aside from having a perfectly written resume, show how you added value to your previous employers. You can also make your resume pop by using a well-designed template. For more details on how to craft a well-written resume, click here.
  2. Be engaged with the company. Before going to the interview, follow the company on all social media channels. Pay attention to what the company is posting on social media so you are knowledgeable about the latest company news in the interview.
  3. Have a good interview. Arrive to your interview with a positive attitude and be eager for the job. You should also have some well-thought out examples of your work-ethic to prove you are hard-working and reliable. For additional information on interviewing, check out the five common mistakes made in an interview.
  4. Follow up after the interview. Send a thank you note or email within 24 hours after the interview is over. It is important to thank the interviewer for taking the time out of their busy schedule to meet with you.

Another way to stand out amongst the competition is to apply with a staffing agency! Recruiters know how to market your skills to employers. If you are in the market for your next opportunity, apply with Recruiting Solutions here: https://www.recruitingsolutionsonline.com/job-seekers/job-opportunities/.

Looking for a new job? LinkedIn is a necessity when trying to get a new job. If you don’t have a LinkedIn account, sign up today! While social media can frequently get a bad reputation when it comes to advancing your career it can also help you when used effectively.

Here are five easy steps to update your LinkedIn:

1)      Take a new professional headshot. Since this is the first thing someone will see, make sure your headshot looks professional. Wear appropriate business attire. Use a solid background. You can take this on a smart phone or with a camera with at least 12 megapixels. Make sure your profile picture reflects the current version and best version of yourself.

2)      Update your summary and your title. This is your chance to highlight and summarize your profile. What are you looking for in a new career? Your summary can highlight the fact that you are looking for a new job or simply articulate the things that make you stand out. Use adjectives to describe yourself such as “Motivated Financial Analyst” or “Experienced Marketing Professional” to help sell yourself.

3)      Turn on the button that says “Let Recruiters Know You are Interested.” When recruiters are looking for a candidate with your qualifications, you will show up in their searches.

4)      Add the right verbiage. Make sure you use action words such as managed, executed planned, etc. Additionally, any time you can use numerical values to show how you increased or added value to a company, do so. Whether you increased sales or helped out with a fundraiser – use these numbers to measure your success.

5) Add your volunteer experience or temporary experience. Adding your volunteer work shows that you are involved in the community and that you have experience outside of your assigned job. Additionally, if you’ve had any temporary experience, always list that on your profile as well whether it’s an internship or a temporary job.

Connect with us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/recruiting-solutions/

So you’ve just been laid off, how do you find a new job? Here are six steps you to help you with your job search.

1)     Reflect.  Although you might be nervous and stressed about not having a job right now, it is important to first take some time to reflect and figure out what you want in your next job and the next phase of your career. Don’t just jump on Indeed or ZipRecruiter and apply to the first thing you see.  Reflect on what you liked and didn’t like about your last job. Do you like working with others or alone? Do you like working with your hands or working at a desk all day? Find out what makes you enjoy doing. You will spend one third of your week working so you want to make sure you pursue a job and career that you enjoy.

2)      Learn from your past. Often times lay offs are completely out of your control. Maybe a company has acquired your company or the company didn’t hit their numbers and has to re-evaluate talent. However, if you did make a mistake, learn from your mistakes.  Be honest with yourself and figure out how to become a better employee for your next employer. Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are and learn from your weaknesses.

3)      Update your resume. Often times when you apply on a company’s website, it will utilize an Application Tracking Systems which will search your resume and see if the words match the job you are applying for. Make sure you have the right key words in your resume to get through the filter. For more details on how to update your resume, check out our resume blog.

4)      Update your social media. More than half of employers said they have turned down an applicant because of their social media. Make sure all of your public facing social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) is updated and professional. Even if some of your accounts are private, make sure your profile picture and cover photo is appropriate. Update your LinkedIn and turn on the button that says ‘Interested in Careers’ so that recruiters know you are looking for a job.

5)      Utilize your network. There is definitely some truth to ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.’ Also, according to an article by NPR, 70% – 80% of jobs are not advertised. Brainstorm and think about your connections. Even if your network doesn’t include any hiring managers, everyone knows someone and that someone might be able to get you the interview. Make calls or send a mass email to your network letting them know your situation and the types of opportunities you are looking. Take a friend to coffee or lunch and explain to them your situation and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

6)     Last but not least, don’t give up. Be consistent and persistent. Keep applying for jobs utilizing Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Career Builder, LinkedIn Jobs, Monster, Glassdoor, etc. If you don’t have a job, your job is to find a new job. Dedicate several hours every day to applying for your next job.

Another way to find a job is to utilize a staffing agency. Recruiting Solutions staffs for full-time, part-time and direct hire opportunities. To learn more about our opportunities or to apply for a job, visit http://www.recruitingsolutionsonline.com/job-seekers/job-opportunities/.
