Looking for a job in manufacturing? Attending a job fair gives you a chance to establish connections with prospective employers that can allow you to secure your dream job. However, to accomplish this, it is crucial to leave a positive impression during these events!

That’s where Recruiting Solutions comes in. We specialize in organizing job fairs for our customers in your area.

Follow these tips to make a memorable impact and increase your likelihood of getting the job you want.

  1. Dress Professionally:

Your attire speaks volumes about your professionalism and commitment. Dressing in appropriate attire demonstrates that you take your career seriously and are prepared to impress potential employers. Choose clothing that is well-fitted, clean, neat, and appropriate for a professional setting.

  1. Bring multiple copies of your resume:

A well-crafted resume is your ticket to showcasing your skills and experience. Be sure to bring several copies of your resume to the job fair. This action demonstrates that you are prepared to discuss your experience and are genuinely interested in exploring new career opportunities. Keep your resume concise and highlight relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that align with the light industrial industry.

  1. Research the companies attending:

Prior to the job fair, take the time to research the companies that will be in attendance. Knowing who will be participating in the job fair enables you to tailor your resume to suit each specific company’s openings and requirements. Familiarize yourself with their mission, values, and recent achievements. Overall knowledge of their organization can set you apart from other candidates and leave a lasting impression on potential employers.

  1. Practice your elevator speech:

At job fairs, time is often limited, and you need to make a strong first impression quickly. Craft a concise and engaging elevator speech, which is a 30-second summary of your skills, experience, and career goals. Your elevator speech should effectively communicate your unique skills to potential employers. Practice it beforehand with friends and family to ensure you deliver it confidently.

  1. Ask thoughtful questions:

Prepare a list of questions to ask employers you meet at the job fair. Asking specific and relevant questions not only showcases your enthusiasm but also helps you gather valuable insights that can aid in your job search. Consider asking about company culture, growth opportunities, or current projects they are working on.

By following these valuable tips, you can create a lasting positive impression at job fairs and increase your chances of securing the career move that you want! Remember, it’s crucial to be punctual and show enthusiasm for the manufacturing industry. 10 Best Questions to ask an Employer in an Interview

Interview questions

At the end of an interview, the hiring manager will ask, “Do you have any questions for me?” It is necessary to have questions prepared for the interviewer to show your interest in the role. The questions below can be customized to your interview.

What are some of the company’s 5-year goals?

When interviewing with a company, it is helpful to know their goals and objectives to gauge their growth plan. This can also give insight into future projects, acquisitions and possible career growth opportunity. By asking this, it also shows that you are forward thing and see yourself with the company for the long-haul.

What is the management style of the person I will be reporting to?

Getting along with your manager is critical to the success of your role. Is the manager hands-on or hands-off? When reporting to an interview, it is important to know if you need a hand-on or laissez-faire management style and which you respond better to. Individuals whose managers match their motivational and performance styles statistically have better performing teams.

What is the biggest challenge of this job?

When applying for a role, it is key to know the full scope of the job. This includes knowing details about the challenges that come along with this. Interest in this shows that you are not deterred by a challenge and are ready to take on this role.

What is the first project you would have me work on?

When starting any job, you will want to know what to expect and the top priority for this position. The answer to this question can indicate what your priorities starting on the first day will be. When starting on the first day, you want to be prepared for your first project’s goals.

How do you define success in this role?

Success is key to keeping a job. As an employee, you will want to know the employer’s expectations of you. It is imperative to have benchmarks created by the manager to know if you are meeting the expectations that the company has for your intended role.

What does the career path for growth and advancement look like in this role?

When preparing for a job opportunity, you will want to know if there will be a future for you at this company. It is meaningful to ask these questions to understand what the next step are for your career advancement within the company.

In what ways have you grown while being with this company?

The answer to this question will indicate other skills and career development opportunities that company provides (leadership training, project management, etc.) This also provides insights on skills and abilities learned while participating on the job.

If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start?

While applying for jobs it is relevant to know the timeline. This will allow you to put in your notice at your other job or allow you to plan for potential relocation if necessary.

When can I expect to hear from you?

Again, this provides a timeline of when you should expect to hear from the hiring manager. This question allows you to follow up after the interview process has been completed if you do not hear from them within that determined timeline.

What is the overall culture like?

The overall culture is significant to see how you will fit in at the company. A key thing to look for in your job search is to look for a positive culture to enter. Do they allow workplace flexibility? Are people happy with the management and leadership team? Does the company offer opportunities for team bonding? Another way to find out how the culture really is. Ask if you can connect with an employee on the team, you would be working for. Ask them for candid feedback about the environment as some manager may be unaware of certain cultural issues.

It can be intimidating preparing for your first interview. Recruiting Solutions put together the most commonly asked questions and examples of how to answer them!

  1. Tell me about yourself

This is often the first question asked by a recruiter. It can be intimidating. Come prepared with a one-minute pitch about yourself.  You should include details about your work experience including any experience at temporary, part-time jobs or internships. Close this pitch out on why you think you would be perfect for that role. The Muse recommends this tactic to perfect this question (https://www.themuse.com/advice/tell-me-about-yourself-interview-question-answer-examples#formula)

  • Present: Talk a little bit about what your current role is, the scope of it, and a big recent accomplishment.
  • Past: Tell the interviewer how you got there and/or mention previous experience that is relevant to the job and company you are applying for.
  • Future: Segue into what you are looking to do next and why you are interested in this gig (and a great fit for it, too).
  • Personal: Remember to be human and feel free to share some personal information as well.

You can tweak it to fit your situation or interview process.

  1. What is your greatest strength?

To answer this question: have three possible answers prepared. It is important to look at the job description and have an answer that pairs well with it.

Example of how to answer this: For example, if you are applying for a forklift position. You could elaborate on your commitment to safety or your reliability. This shows you are qualified for the role and are confident that you could succeed at the task at hand.

  1. Give me an example of Teamwork in the workplace

The recruiter or hiring manager is looking for how well you can get along with others. If the job requires collaboration this is a suitable time to highlight your ability to connect with others.

Example: When at work, my assembly line and I had a goal to decrease our production time. We were asked to speed up the process. We got together and thought out a solid plan to make sure everyone had the right technique and position on the line to work efficiently and quickly to get the job done. We ended up cutting 15 seconds off our time.

  1. What do you know about this company/organization?

This involves doing your research.  The more you know about the company increases your chances of getting hired. Make sure you look at the company’s website and learn the history and the mission statement. The mission statement will be key to knowing the company’s goals and expectations. Then you can relate your answers to it so that the company can better understand you and your values.

  1. Do you feel comfortable working from home?

Considering the coronavirus pandemic, work from home jobs have become more prevalent. What the recruiter is asking when posing this question is “will you be able to work efficiently and stay motivated throughout the day when not in the office?” The point is to figure out more about the interviewee’s work ethic and if they can be trusted on their own.

Example: Yes, I feel extremely comfortable working from home. I am motivated and willing to complete a task quickly and efficiently. I do not have a problem reaching out to others when needed via zoom or teams to ask questions.

  1. How would your co-workers describe you?

Company culture is important when recruiters or hiring managers are trying to find a fit for their team. When asking this question, recruiters are looking for you to describe yourself as a person, as a colleague, and as a friend. This can also be a strong indicator of your work ethic in the workplace.

Example: My co-workers describe me as a well-rounded person. I am a great friend to them in the office as I am supportive and caring. They also describe me as a diligent worker and go-getter because I am willing to help where I am needed.

  1. Describe a time you learned from your mistakes.

This tells the recruiter you are willing to learn, everyone makes mistakes. The hiring manager is trying to uncover how you learn from your mistakes. You should describe a time that you knew made a mistake and describe how you went about fixing it.

Example: When I was at work, I accidentally forgot to ring in people’s food to the kitchen. The couple that I was serving sat there for 30 minutes before I realized. I immediately went to my manager and told her about the situation. I then went to the kitchen and explained the situation and the urgency behind it. I learned to check more often on my tables and the kitchen to ensure my food is coming out on time. From now on, when I put in a table’s food, I always make sure it is sent to the kitchen.

  1. Do you have any questions for us?

This is typically the last question in the interview. It’s best practice to have several questions prepared to show that you are interesting the position and company. You can ask questions about the job, company, or company culture. This is the last part of the interview which means you should try to make an impression.

Example of how to answer this:

“How do you define success in this role?”

“What is a typical day in the life of a person in my position?”

“What is the first initial project you would need my help with?”

In conclusion, the best thing you can do before an interview is to come prepared. Make sure you practice and know how to answer these questions along with proving that you have done research on the company with your follow up questions.

Your interview is the final decision-factor that stands between you and the job. We asked a Recruiting Solution’s team member, Mary, for her advice for how to best prepare for the interview:

What’s the number one thing someone should do to prepare for an interview (in-person/virtual/phone/etc.)?

An interview is the chance to give your best impression and really pitch yourself. I think the mandatory prerequisite to a good interview is knowing what you’re looking for. This gives the recruiter or employer parameters to determine whether you’re just as a much a fit for them as they are for you. Secondly, read about the position in advance and research the company. Last but not least, prepare questions to ask about the company and the position.

If the job interview is in-person, what should you bring to an interview?

Several copies of your resume. Even if the company has your resume on file and say they will print it, showing up with your resume is an extra initiative that the interviewer will notice. Another helpful thing to bring is a pen and notebook, or a padfolio, so you can take notes on the position and company.

Can you give an example of a time you were impressed with a candidate in an interview?

I am always impressed in an interview when a candidate is honest enough to let me know their feedback on the job. There are no hard feelings and honesty is incredibly helpful. Other than presenting well and engaging in the interview, this is what impresses me most.

What are some of your pet-peeves during an interview?

I could talk about this all day, but to narrow it down : overall poor presentation. It is easy to tell if someone does not care about the job they are interviewing for when an individual does any of the following:

  • Being on the phone during the interview, talking on the phone when they come in to the lobby, or putting someone on the phone on hold during the interview.
  • Dressing inappropriately. It’s uncomfortable for the employer/interviewer. It is difficult to take them professionally, no matter how kindly they present.
  • Communicating poorly: not speaking clearly or loud enough, sitting in the chair like it’s a LA-Z-BOY recliner, excessive yawning and not acting like they’re listening to you. Attentive engagement goes a long way in an interview.

If you are on the job search, one of the best places you can apply is with a local staffing agency. Apply with us today! https://www.recruitingsolutionsonline.com/jobs/

Virtual interviews are becoming the ‘new norm’ due to the impact of COVID-19. Given the new recruiting landscape, we asked one of Recruiting Solutions’ Senior Staffing Coordinators, Ryan Hooper, for his tips and tricks for having a successful virtual interview.

What is your #1 tip to prepare for joining a virtual interview?

When joining a virtual interview, make sure to test your equipment prior to the interview. Do not just assume that everything will work correctly. You’ll want to take some time well before the interview to ensure that your hardware(webcam, computer, tablet, etc.) and software are working correctly. Employers use many different software applications to conduct virtual interviews, such as Zoom, Skype, WebEx and Google Meet; so I would advise everyone to run a dry run on the application to ensure that everything is working correctly, including your audio and video settings.

How can you ensure a successful virtual interview?

Prepare for the interview just as you would if you were coming into the office. Do your research on the position and the company you are interviewing for and, if you have any questions for the interviewer, have them ready. Also, make sure that you have enough time set aside for the interview and make sure that you have a secluded area that will be free of distractions. If you are interviewing for a position that will be remote, even if only for the foreseeable future, take the interview in the area where that you would be using as your work space. Showing the recruiter that you already have a secluded, distraction free work space is a great indicator that you’ve set yourself up for success in a remote position. Also, be prepared to take notes during the interview.

What is your pet peeve in a virtual interview?

Be on time! The recruiter may only have a certain amount of time allotted for your interview, you don’t want them to have to cut your interview short because you weren’t able to get onto the interview on time. Good etiquette is to join the interview a few (3-5) minutes early and have everything ready to go.

Additionally, if you are using a mobile device (phone or tablet) for the interview, make sure that it is propped in a stationary location for the interview. It can be very distracting if I’m interviewing a candidate who is holding or moving their device around while I’m trying to conduct the interview.

What should you do if you are having technical difficulties prior or during the interview?

Let the scheduler or recruiter know as soon as possible. No matter how much preparation you do, some technical difficulties still may be out of your control. For instance if your internet goes out unexpectedly or your computer crashes prior to the interview. Try to troubleshoot what you can, but let the recruiter know prior to the interview if you are having issues and they will be willing to reschedule without holding it against you.

How should you dress for a virtual interview?

Business casual, always. Even if the position doesn’t require a business casual dress code, it’s always a good idea to dress professionally. Again, handle the interview just as you would if you were going into the office for a face to face interview and dress appropriately. To see more tips on how to dress to impress here.

What should you do after the interview is over?

It’s always a good idea to send an email thanking the scheduler or recruiter for their time and consideration after an interview. Also, make sure that you are checking your email frequently in case they do send you any follow up instruction or information. If you haven’t gotten any feedback after a week or so, there’s nothing wrong with sending an email inquiring about the status of your interview.

Keep searching! Don’t suspend your employment search just because you felt good about an interview unless you were given a firm offer and feel the position is right for you. You don’t want to miss out on a good opportunity just because you were waiting to hear back from an employer who may not have felt that you were the best fit for the position.

Back on the job hunt?

If you are relatively new to the job hunt or if it has been a while since you have searched for a job, you will quickly realize how different the current South Carolina job market is. Online job boards and job portals are constantly evolving with new technology, applicant tracking systems, various job boards and job search engines, etc.

Often times, job seekers will reach out to a company to ask if they are hiring or to connect with someone personally in regards to a job. Companies will then typically inform the interested job seeker to go to their website to apply, thus leaving you feeling stranded, disconnected, or unsure of what happens next in the application process.

Here are a few simple ways to better pursue your dream opportunity:

Apply with a staffing agency. When you apply with a staffing agency, recruiters will likely share with you an immediate temporary or a temp-to-hire opening. They could also skill-market your resume to their current employer database, pushing your application to the top of the stack! Recruiters can also utilize their industry knowledge and relationship with a company to increase your chances of getting hired!

Apply on job websites and/or mobile apps. A few of our favorite recommendations for applicants (in other words, websites we post our jobs to) include Glassdoor, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, CareerBuilder and LinkedIn. However, we always encourage candidates to register with us on our company website so that we can have you in our system to be considered for all of our current and future opportunities.

Go to a job fair. It is very beneficial to meet with a recruiter in-person when possible; this way, the recruiter learns more about you, your skillset, and the type of job opportunity you are seeking. South Carolina companies and recruiters can get bombarded with applicants and resumes — an in-person meeting is one way you are sure to stand out!

With locations in Greenville, Columbia and Florence, South Carolina, Recruiting Solutions is the destination employment agency for job seekers. Register with us today to be considered for a light industrial, office professional, or information technology job opportunity!

You may have the perfect resume and experience for the job, but a phone interview can be the make or break in landing the in-person interview. Often times a company or staffing/temp agency will filter through resumes and then conduct a phone interview to narrow the choice down to the top candidates.

Here are a few tips to make sure you are selected for the in-person interview:

  1. Treat your phone interview like a real interview. Even though you are not face-to-face with your interviewer, this interview is just as important (if not more important) as the in-person interview. Companies and staffing agencies receive hundreds of resumes from online applicants. By conducting phone interviews, it makes it much easier to weed out unfit candidates or candidates who are not interested in the role. Through a phone interview, you can know more about an individual, rather than knowing only what a resume portrays.
  2. Prepare your environment. Make sure you eliminate any and every distraction before your phone interview. Sit at a table, and dress the part. You look the way you feel, so if you are in your pajamas and laying on the couch, you may not conduct your best interview. Here are a couple other tips to help you prepare your interview environment; turn off the TV or any other distraction/noise, put your pets away, go to a room or space that is separate from family members, avoid taking a phone interview while driving.
  3. Be prepared. Just like any other in-person interview, make sure you have reviewed the job description and researched the company that you are applying for. You want to make sure you tailor your answers to relevant job experience indicated on the job description. Research the company’s products, services, and recent news. If you have applied with a staffing or temporary agency, simply review the job description that you applied for or were given by a recruiter.
  4. Listen. While you do need to provide details about your overall experience, make sure you let the recruiter or interviewer guide the conversation. Do not interrupt or speak over them. Let them ask you the questions, and provide a thoughtful response. Take your time, and provide well-thought out answers.
  5. Avoid casual language. Make sure you are well-mannered over the phone, and avoid casual language such as “cool” or “awesome.” Politely answer the phone with your name. Avoid casual language. Make sure you answer the questions will fully thought out answers and in full-sentences. Often times, when people are nervous, they will talk quickly. Make sure you pace yourself and think through your response before answering the question.
  6. Ask questions at the end of the conversation. Now is your opportunity to show that you are interested in the job or company. Make sure you have several questions prepared to ask. Questions indicate that you are interested. You want to make sure you have the best understanding of the job and the company in order to be sure this is the best role for you.

Keep in mind that a phone interview or phone screen should be taken with just as much importance as an in-person interview. After you have completed an interview, we highly recommend that you send a thank you note to each individual that you interviewed with. This is one way to stand out amongst the competition and to help you close the deal on landing your next job opportunity. Whether you send a thank you note via email or a hand written note, this is one way you can be sure your interviewer will remember you and it will give you an advantage over your competition.

Here are several things that you need to communicate in your post-interview thank you note:

Gratitude. Thank the interviewer for taking the time out of their busy schedule to meet with you. Be appreciative that they are considering you for the role/opportunity.

Understanding of the Job. Add some details about specifics they mentioned they were looking for. Let them know you heard them and understand what they are looking for.

“I noticed you indicated the need to be flexible as this role is evolves and I want to let you know that I am very adaptable.”

“I know you mentioned you were looking to increase sales by x% by the end of next quarter and I think my marketing skills will be able to help you accomplish that goal.”

Individualization. Make sure you affirm to the interviewer why you are the right person to hire for the position. This is where you need to sell your unique attributions, the things that distinct you from other job seekers. List some  ideas, projects or processes you will implement to improve the department or overall organization.

Personalization. At the end of the day, we are all human. Make sure your letter indicates that YOU are human. Add a personal touch or something that you remembered they said. This is another way to confirm that you were paying attention in the conversation but also the fact that you are personable.

“Hope you have fun at your kid’s soccer game tonight!”

“It’s always nice to meet another Falcon’s fan!”

Closing. Finish the note by letting them know if they have any additional questions, they may contact you and leave your personal contact information such as you phone number. Let them know you are looking forward to hearing from them.

Once you send your post-interview thank you note/email, do not reach back out until you hear from them. Unless they have indicated that they will reach out to you by a certain date and you do not hear from them for several days after, then (and only then) it may be appropriate to reach out.

Ask a Recruiter: Interview Advice

When it comes to interviewing, recruiters have a lot of experience in conducting face-to-face interviews. Recruiters interview people all day, every day and see thousands of resumes! We asked our Branch Manager, Mackenzie Dunham, what her advice would be for a candidate who is interviewing for a job they want.

  1. How do you stand out in the interview process? Standing out in the interview process can be challenging in such a competitive market.  My advice would be to focus on simple things that you are in control of.  For example, being punctual, presenting well, and showing your interest in the company or specific position.   You should always arrive 15 minutes early to an interview and should not use your cell phone while waiting.  First impressions are extremely important. Be sure to dress for the job you want and come prepared.  Doing research on the company prior to an interview will always put you at an advantage and shows your dedication to finding a job!  Along with researching the company, be prepared to answer typical interview questions thoroughly, yet concise.  Recruiters meet with multiple candidates each day, and you’d be surprised at how meaningful these simple things can be!

2. What’s your favorite interview question to ask and why? I always love to ask candidates what they enjoyed most about a position, and what their biggest challenge was.  I think this speaks to them both on a professional and personal level, and goes beyond surface-level interview questions.  When working with clients, I always like to speak beyond the candidate’s relevant experience to share another side, and to show our in-depth screening process.

3. Once you’ve interviewed with the hiring manager, how long should you wait before you reach back out? I wouldn’t say there is necessarily a specific timeline; however, sending a follow up thank you email is definitely a way to stand out to a recruiter/hiring manager!  While interviewing, be sure to ask specific questions about next steps, or what the timeline looks like, that way you know when it may be appropriate to reach out.

4. What advice would you give today’s job seeker? My advice would be to stay open minded, and to be as patient as possible.  If a recruiter presents a job opportunity to you, it’s because they feel you are well qualified to work for their client and for that position specifically.  Another piece of advice is to use all resources you have access to.  For example, if you see a job posting on Indeed and there is a specific recruiter’s email address associated, email the recruiter directly to help stand out compared to other applicants.  Take advantage of job fairs, networking events in your area, and any opportunity to meet hiring managers in person.  A positive attitude, professionalism and hard work goes a long way!

When you are applying for a job, here are four ways to stand out amongst the competition.

  1. Make your resume stand out.  Your resume is the first thing a company will look at before they decide to interview you. Aside from having a perfectly written resume, show how you added value to your previous employers. You can also make your resume pop by using a well-designed template. For more details on how to craft a well-written resume, click here.
  2. Be engaged with the company. Before going to the interview, follow the company on all social media channels. Pay attention to what the company is posting on social media so you are knowledgeable about the latest company news in the interview.
  3. Have a good interview. Arrive to your interview with a positive attitude and be eager for the job. You should also have some well-thought out examples of your work-ethic to prove you are hard-working and reliable. For additional information on interviewing, check out the five common mistakes made in an interview.
  4. Follow up after the interview. Send a thank you note or email within 24 hours after the interview is over. It is important to thank the interviewer for taking the time out of their busy schedule to meet with you.

Another way to stand out amongst the competition is to apply with a staffing agency! Recruiters know how to market your skills to employers.
